Sari Not Sorry is a physical installation that I am creating for my Senior Project. The image is an AI-generated imagination of what the work-in-progress physical installation would look like.
About
Sari Not Sorry is an installation that encourages South Asian women to share their emotional struggles and create a sense of unity within the community.
Sari Not Sorry addresses what happens when the fabric of tradition (the Sari) feels too tight or heavy and starts to rip. The purpose is to share stories about the effort it takes to look perfect on the outside when women are internally dealing with issues. I want to provide South Asian women across generations with a space to share their experiences/stories. This includes (but is not limited to) grandmothers and mothers who rarely got to speak about their feelings, or daughters who are trying to live differently.
An exhibit space is set up with a saris hanging around. There’s a white space in the middle where there is projections of images. The first image is a perfect photo of a South Asian woman. Then, the second image will be revealed: an unconventional, vulnerable, or non-traditional "Not Sorry" photo. Unraveling the second photo will automatically prompt for the woman's audio story to play aloud through speakers in the room.
